"A city of Cathay" ist eine über 11 Meter lange chinesische Bilder-Rolle und ist einer der größten Schätze der alten chinesischen Kultur, insbesondere der Malerei. Die Rolle befindet sich im National Palace Museum in Taipei. Angeboten wird hier eine Replik dieser Rolle, die vom Museum ca. 1980 herausgegeben wurde, inzwischen aber vergriffen ist. Die Rolle befindet sich in dem originalen mit chinesischer Schrift geschmückten Kasten (32 cm lang, 7 cm tief, 6 cm hoch). Die Rolle ist ohne Zweifel ein Muß für jeden an alter chinesischer Kultur und Malerei Interessierten und wir hatten selbst viel Freude damit.

Die Rolle wird auf dem Beilagezettel wie folgt beschrieben: "Farbe und Tinte auf Seide. 35,6 cm x 1.152,8 cm. Es ist ein Gemeinschaftswerk von 5 Hof-Malern Ch'en Mei, Sun Hu, Chin K'un, Tai Hung und Ch'en Chih-tao während des ersten Jahres der Ch'ien-lung-Regierung (1736-1795) in der Ch'ing-Dynastie. Während der Sung-Dynastie malte Chang Tse-tuan eine Version des Ch'ing-ming-Festes auf dem Fluß, wobei er das Leben in der Hauptstadt K'ai-feng abbildete. Seine Komposition wurde oft von späteren Künstlern kopiert. In dieser Version von 5 Hof-Malern ist der Pinsel gewandt eingesetzt; die Brücken, Häuser und Figuren sind alle präzise gemalt. Die Rolle ist ein herausragendes Beispiel der akademischen Malweise der Ch'ing-Dynastie.

Die Malerei der photographischen Replik beschreibt das Volk und die alltäglichen Aktivitäten in der Sung-Dynastie (960-1279) in der am Flußufer gelegenen Hauptstadt Kaifeng während des Frühlings-Festes. In ihrer horizontalen Ausdehnung enthält sie mehr als 4.000 menschliche Figuren, jede nur einen Inch (2,54 cm) groß, wie sie ihre täglichen Verrichtungen vornehmen, in ganz derselben Weise, wie sie es im Laufe der chinesischen Geschichte immer taten. Hier findet man eine Hochzeits-Zeromonie mit buten Wimpeln und Musikanten; dort eine lebensvolle Outdoor-Oper, Theater spielende Affen, Akrobaten und Seiltänzer, die Freizeit-Gestaltung der damaligen Menschen. Die lärmigen Markplätze und lauten Straßen scheinen so lebendig zu sein, dass sie vor den Augen des Betrachters zum Leben erweckt werden.

Welch eine Art von Welt war China 1000 Jahre zuvor während der Song-Dynastie, zur selben Zeit, als Europa sich noch eher in "Durklen Zeitaltern" befand? Man kann viel aus dieser Rolle ablesen. Es war auch in dieser Zeit, daß die Erfindungen des Schießpulvers, des Buchdrucks und des Kompasses zuerst auftraten. Die Hauptstadt der Song-Dynastie zur dieser Zeit war Kaifeng, in der heutigen Provinz Henan. Zur Zeit der Herrschaft des Herrschers Shenzong (1068-1086) war Kaifeng überhaupt die größte Stadt der Welt und im Jahr 1103 erreichte Chinas Population die 100 Millionen zum ersten Mal. Es ist schon etwas sehr Besonderes, eine so detaillierte Beschreibung des alltäglichen Lebens der damaligen Menschen zu besitzen.

A city of Cathay" is a handscroll of over 11 meters and is one of the greatest treasures of the ancient Chinese culture, especially of the Chinese painting. The scroll is preserved at the National Palace Museum in Taipei. Our offer is a replica published by the museum in 1980, now sold out. It is still in the original box (32 x 7 x 6 cm), decorated with a Chinese inscription. The roll is also offered by us in AuVito, there you can find several fotos. The scroll is without any doubt a must for everybody interested in old Chinese culture and painting. We ourselves had great pleasure with the wonderful handscroll.

The text of the enclosed paper gives the following information: "A city of Cathay. Color and Ink on Silk. 35,6 cm. x 1.152,8 cm. Handscroll. It is a joint work painted by five court painters Ch'en Mei, Sun Hu, Chin K'un, Tai Hung und Ch'en Chih-tao during the first year of Ch'ien-lung reign (1736-1795) in the Ch'ing dynasty. During the Sung dynasty, Chang Tse-tuan painted a version of the Ch'ing-ming Festival on the River, depicting life in the capital of K'ai-feng. His composition was often copied by later artists. In this version by five court painters, the brush is deftly handled; the bridges, houses and figures all are precisely painted. The handscroll is an excellent example of Ch'ing dynasty academic painting."

The photographic representation of the famous Chinese scroll painting depicts the people and everyday activities in the Sung dynasty (960-1279) in the riverside capital of Kaifeng during the spring festival. The scroll is 37 feet long and only one foot high. Within its horizontal purview, more than 4,000 human figures, each only half an inch tall, are shown performing daily activities in much the same way as they have throughout history. Here you will find a wedding procession with colorful banners and musicians; a lively outdoor opera; performing monkeys, acrobats and a tight-rope walker; and the happy, carefree lives of the common people. The bustling marketplaces and noisy streets are so vivid they seem to come to life before your eyes.

What kind of a world was China a thousand years ago, at a time when Europe, the seat of Western civilization, was still in the Dark Ages, and what kind of lives did its people lead? You can learn from this scroll. It was in Song dynasty China, around 1000 years ago, that gunpowder, printing and the compass - three great inventions that were to shape the course of global civilization-made their first appearance. The Song dynasty capital at that time, also known as the Eastern Capital because of its location relative to Luoyang, was at Kaifeng, in today's Henan province. By the reign of Emperor Shenzong (1068-1086) Kaifeng was the largest city in the world, and in the year 1103, during the reign of Huizong, China's population exceeded 100 million for the first time, reaching 102,600,000 people. It is a big chance to have such a vivid view of the life from times thousand years ago.
